Profile
The Airhead is a fruity vodka punch built for easy drinking: vodka, fruit punch, fresh lime juice and a little simple syrup, shaken, poured over ice in a hurricane glass and topped with Sprite. It comes out bright, a little tart and lightly fizzy, the kind of drink that works just as well at a backyard party as it does at a bar.
Most versions lean on bottled sour mix and whatever fruit punch is in the fridge, which means the drink lives or dies by how sweet that punch happens to be. This version uses fresh lime juice and a touch of syrup instead, which gives you a lot more control. You can taste it moving from sweet toward tart before the soda goes in and adjust from there. It is still the same fun, fruity punch, just with a few more knobs to turn.
Glass: Hurricane glass | Strength: Medium | Serves: 1 | Prep Time: 5 minutes
Bartenders tip: Use large ice cubes. They melt slower than crushed ice, so the drink does not water down before you finish it. Shake hard enough to fully blend the syrup and juice, or you will find a streak of it at the bottom of the glass. Fresh fruit punch beats bottled, but if bottled is all you have, an extra splash of lime will cut through the sugar. For a more tropical version, swap a quarter ounce of the syrup for coconut cream or coconut liqueur. Club soda in place of Sprite makes it less sweet.
Ingredients
- 1 ½ oz vodka (mid-quality, chilled)
- 1 oz fresh fruit punch (not overly sweet)
- ¾ oz fresh lime juice (about ½ lime)
- ¼ oz simple syrup (to balance tartness)
- 3 oz Sprite (or club soda for less sweetness)
- Ice (preferably large cubes)
- Garnish: lime wheel and/or fresh mint sprig
Steps
- Chill your equipment: Fill a mixing glass or cocktail shaker with ice water for about a minute, then discard it. This keeps the shake cold and controls dilution.
- Build and shake: Add the vodka, fruit punch, lime juice, and simple syrup to the shaker. Fill with ice, preferably large cubes, and shake hard for 10 to 12 seconds to chill and lightly aerate the citrus.
- Strain and top: Double strain into a chilled hurricane glass filled with fresh ice. Top gently with Sprite or club soda to preserve the fizz.
- Garnish and serve: Add a lime wheel on the rim and a mint sprig if you want extra aroma, then serve right away.
