Profile
Peregrine’s Peril pairs dark rum with Southern Comfort, adds a splash of crème de bananes and a teaspoon each of lemon and lime juice, then shakes it cold and serves it up. It drinks like a tiki cocktail that skipped the umbrella: warm, a little wild and built to go down easy.
It does not come from any historical cocktail book and reads more like a home-bar creation made in the spirit of classic tiki. Southern Comfort is an unusual partner for dark rum, but its peach and vanilla sweetness behaves a lot like the fruit liqueurs in real tiki recipes. The banana liqueur doubles down on that tropical direction, while the rum keeps the drink from sliding into fruit-punch territory. Two liqueurs plus rum can tip sweet fast, which is why that small amount of citrus does so much of the work.

Bartenders tip: Southern Comfort varies a lot in sweetness, so if yours tastes especially sweet, nudge the lime juice up by a quarter teaspoon rather than cutting back on the liqueurs. Shake hard for a full 12 seconds so the rum, liqueurs and citrus fully come together. Serve it right away, since the citrus starts to fade once the drink sits.
Ingredients
- ½ oz Southern Comfort
- 1 oz dark rum
- ½ oz creme de bananes
- 1 tsp fresh lemon juice
- 1 tsp fresh lime juice
- Ice
- Garnish: lime wheel
Steps
- Chill the glass: Fill a cocktail glass with ice water while you shake, then discard it before straining.
- Combine and shake: Add the Southern Comfort, dark rum, creme de bananes, lemon juice, and lime juice to a shaker half filled with ice. Shake hard for about 12 seconds to fully chill and marry the rum, liqueur, and citrus.
- Strain: Strain into the chilled glass, leaving the ice behind.
- Garnish and serve: Add a lime wheel and serve right away, while it is still cold from the shake.
