Profile
The joke is in the hardware aisle. A Screwdriver is vodka and orange juice. A Phillips screwdriver is the same tool with a different head on it. Swap the orange juice for Sunny Delight and you have, by that reasoning, the same drink with a different drive.
Sunny D is not orange juice and has never pretended otherwise. It is roughly five percent juice, built mostly on water, corn syrup and citric acid, thicker and sweeter than the real thing and a shade of orange not found in nature. Whether that is the appeal or the problem depends almost entirely on what decade you were a child in. Two ounces of vodka against six ounces of it makes a drink that tastes like a packed lunch with consequences.
Glass: Highball glass | Strength: Light | Serves: 1 | Prep Time: 2 minutes
Bartender’s tip: Do not chill this one to death. Sunny D is already sweet, and very cold sweetness reads as flat rather than refreshing, so two or three cubes is plenty. If you want the flavor of an actual Screwdriver, use real orange juice, but understand you have then simply made a Screwdriver and forfeited the pun, which was the only reason anyone ordered this.
Steps
- Fill the glass: Place 2 to 3 ice cubes into a glass.
- Build: Add the vodka and Sunny Delight, adjusting the amount to taste.
- Serve: Stir and serve.
