Profile
Phantasmic Explosion is a drink that has clearly been named by the same person who ordered it, and the name promises a great deal more than four ounces of 7-Up and three ounces of blue Hawaiian schnapps can reasonably deliver.
What it does deliver is color. Blue Hawaiian schnapps is tropical, pineapple and coconut leaning, sweet, and an electric blue that survives dilution better than almost anything else behind the bar. Cut with lemon-lime soda over a full glass of ice, it comes out somewhere between swimming pool and sports drink, and it tastes roughly the way that sounds: sweet, fizzy, and completely uninterested in nuance. There is no technique here whatsoever. You pour two things into a Collins glass and stir.
Glass: Collins glass | Strength: Light | Serves: 1 | Prep Time: 2 minutes
Bartender’s tip: Fill the glass properly with ice before you pour, not after. Warm schnapps and warm soda make this cloying very quickly, and a full glass of ice also slows the dilution so the color holds. It scales up well in a pitcher for a party, where the blue does more work than the flavor does, just keep roughly the four-to-three ratio of soda to schnapps or it tips into syrup.
Steps
- Build: Pour both ingredients into a collins glass filled with ice cubes.
- Serve: Stir well and serve.
