There is no pineapple in the Pineappleless Pineapple Juice. That is the entire joke and also the entire claim. Southern Comfort, orange juice, lemon-lime soda and cola, mixed together in a pint glass, are supposed to land somewhere near pineapple on the way down.
It half works. Southern Comfort is peach and apricot leaning with a lot of sugar, and the combination of citrus, cola spice and that stone fruit does produce something tropical and hard to place. Whether your brain files it under pineapple probably depends on how many you have had. The original instructions call for a sixteen ounce plastic cup and measure the Southern Comfort by pouring to the first line, which tells you exactly what kind of drink this is and where it came from.
Glass: Pint glass | Strength: Strong | Serves: 1 | Prep Time: 2 minutes
Bartenders tip: Fifteen ounces of liquid means this needs a full pint glass and no ice will fit if you pour it all, so either use a proper sixteen ounce glass or scale the whole thing down by a third and build it over ice. Add the sodas last and swirl rather than stir, since stirring flattens the carbonation that is holding this together. Four ounces of Southern Comfort plus a float of overproof rum is a serious pour, so treat the size of the glass as a warning rather than a target.
Steps
- Pour the Southern Comfort into a pint glass.
- Add the splash of Bacardi 151, then the 7-Up, orange juice and Coca-Cola.
- Swirl briefly and serve.
