Profile
This version of the Perfect Margarita skips the mixer entirely: good tequila, a proper orange liqueur, a splash of orange curaçao and fresh lime juice, shaken hard and poured over ice. It leans much heavier on tequila than most bar recipes, two and a half ounces against just half an ounce of triple sec, so the agave comes through clearly instead of hiding behind sweetness. The splash of curaçao adds a deeper orange note for complexity rather than extra sugar.
It is a strong, bright, spirit-forward margarita, sour and clean with just enough orange to round it out. The salted rim is optional for a reason, because it changes the drink more than people expect. Salt brightens the citrus and tames the tequila’s heat, but it also makes every sip a little different depending on how much rim you catch. Skip it if you want the tequila and lime to speak for themselves, or add it for the classic bar experience.
Glass: Rocks glass | Strength: Strong | Serves: 1 | Prep Time: 5 minutes
Bartenders tip: Use a 100 percent agave tequila, since the tequila is doing most of the talking here. A blanco keeps it crisp and bright, while a reposado adds a little vanilla and oak. Squeeze the lime right before you mix, and shake hard with plenty of ice so the drink gets enough dilution to take the edge off all that tequila. If you salt the rim, salt only half of it so you can choose sip by sip.
