Profile
The Perfect Manhattan is a refined take on one of the oldest cocktails in the American canon. “Perfect” has nothing to do with quality here. It is bartending shorthand for a drink split evenly between dry and sweet vermouth. Where a standard Manhattan leans rich and sweet, the even split pulls it drier, more herbal and noticeably more complex. It is stirred, served up in a chilled glass and finished with a cherry.
The Manhattan goes back to late 1800s New York, and the Perfect version follows the same naming logic used across the classic family, from the Perfect Martini to the Perfect Rob Roy. Splitting the vermouth gives the spirit more room to show its own character instead of getting buried under sugar. For a Manhattan, that means trading some of the classic’s cherry-forward sweetness for something drier and closer to what the whiskey actually tastes like. It is a quietly sophisticated choice before dinner or for a slow evening drink.

Bartenders tip: This recipe calls for blended whiskey, which keeps it smooth and easygoing. Rye is the traditional Manhattan choice, and its spicy, dry profile plays especially well against the dry vermouth, while bourbon makes it rounder and a little sweeter. Stir for a full 30 seconds with good ice, since a drink this spirit-forward needs the dilution to soften it. Use a proper cocktail cherry if you can. The bright red maraschino cherries sold for baking are a different product and will throw off the balance.
Ingredients
- 2 oz Blended Whiskey
- 1/2 oz Dry Vermouth
- 1/2 oz Sweet Vermouth
- 1 dash Angostura Bitters
- Ice (for stirring)
- Maraschino cherry, for garnish
Steps
- Chill Your Glass: Fill a coupe or martini glass with ice water and set it aside while you build the drink. A properly chilled glass keeps the cocktail cold without diluting it further.
- Combine the Ingredients: Add the blended whiskey, dry vermouth, sweet vermouth, and a dash of Angostura bitters to a mixing glass.
- Add Ice and Stir: Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir steadily for 20 to 30 seconds. Stirring rather than shaking keeps the drink silky and clear. Shaking would aerate it and cloud the appearance.
- Strain: Discard the ice water from your chilled glass. Strain the cocktail into the empty glass, leaving the ice behind. This drink is served up, with no ice in the final glass.
- Garnish and Serve: Drop in a maraschino cherry and serve immediately, while the glass is still cold to the touch.
