Profile
The Pink Flamingo is orange juice with three ounces of spirit under it and a dash of sloe gin on top for colour. The name is about the look rather than the taste, since a single dash of sloe gin does very little to six ounces of juice beyond tinting it.
The pairing that matters is vodka and Cointreau. An ounce and a half each is a lot of orange liqueur, and it makes this considerably sweeter and stronger than a screwdriver, which is the drink it otherwise resembles. Cointreau is dry as orange liqueurs go, so it lifts the juice rather than burying it, but three ounces of spirit in a tall glass goes down faster than it should.
Glass: Collins glass | Strength: Strong | Serves: 1 | Prep Time: 3 minutes
Bartenders tip: The original calls for three quarters of a glass of orange juice, which is about six ounces in a Collins and what the measure here reflects. Fresh juice is worth it given how much of the drink it is. Shake rather than build, because the sloe gin needs help distributing and it otherwise sits in a slick on top. If you want the pink to actually read as pink rather than a faint blush, a second dash is the honest way to get there.
