Profile
The Pink Pillow is a big, easygoing drink served in a beer mug, which tells you most of what you need to know about its intentions. Three ounces of vodka go in first, then a dash of grenadine for color, then equal parts sweet and sour mix and ginger ale to fill.
That is a lot of vodka, but thirteen ounces of liquid spreads it out, so it drinks more like a long sour than a knockout. The ginger ale is the smart choice here. It gives the sour mix a little spice and a lot of lift, and it keeps the whole thing from tasting like a pitcher of margarita base. The grenadine barely registers as flavor and is mostly there for the soft pink color that gives the drink its name.
Glass: Beer mug | Strength: Strong | Serves: 1 | Prep Time: 3 minutes
Bartenders tip: Fill the mug with ice before anything else, since a drink this size warms up fast. Add the grenadine a little at a time, as the original directions suggest, and stop as soon as the color turns pink. Too much and it goes red and syrupy. A fresh sour mix made with lemon, lime and simple syrup is a big upgrade over the bottled kind, and a spicier ginger ale holds up better against the vodka than a mild one.
Steps
- Pour the vodka into a beer mug, and add grenadine until pink.
- Add equal parts of sour mix and ginger ale until full.
